Artificial intelligence for sustainable urban development

28. May 2025

The AI Canvas is a tool for exploring the potential of AI use cases in municipal ecosystems. A structured approach makes it possible to systematically develop and evaluate use cases based on their goal orientation, suitability, and feasibility. An accompanying guide provides methodological and theoretical support for the practical application of the tool.

AI Canvas (in German)Guide (in German)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a key technology that opens up new possibilities for shaping sustainable urban development.
Data-based applications can accelerate processes, improve decision-making, and help deploy resources more effectively. The range of possible applications includes intelligent traffic planning, predictive maintenance, adaptive lighting systems, and smart waste management. To effectively unlock this potential, technological developments must be aligned with sustainability goals and societal needs.

The AI Canvas supports municipalities in shaping the use of AI in a strategic and sustainable way.
The tool helps administrative staff identify relevant use cases, assess their benefits, and realistically evaluate their feasibility under municipal conditions. In doing so, the Canvas provides orientation within the field of tension between innovation pressure, public interest obligations, and practical feasibility.

To the AI Canvas

The accompanying guide provides a structured manual for conducting workshops with the AI Canvas. It includes methodological guidance and further concepts for embedding AI into sustainable urban development.

Core components of the AI Canvas

  • Goal orientation: Selection of relevant AI application areas with regard to urban sustainability goals and strategic challenges
  • Suitability: Evaluation of AI's contribution to municipal tasks as well as the sustainability and depth of impact of planned applications
  • Feasibility: Review of the conditions for AI deployment with a focus on municipal prerequisites and initial planning steps for implementation

Urban Digitainability Lab: Tools for digital and sustainable transformation in public administration

As part of the Urban Digitainability Lab, tools and learning materials are developed and tested for public administration to support cities in their digital and sustainable transformation. The next thematic focus will be on "Municipal Data Literacy and Sustainability."
