Markus Siewert

Managing director

Markus Siewert serves as Managing Director of the TUM Think Tank at the Munich School of Politics and Public Policy / TUM since April 2022. His academic journey has taken him to institutions including Goethe University Frankfurt, FU Berlin, American University, Georgetown University, and the European University Institute in Florence. His work focuses on the governance and negotiation processes shaping digital transformation, with a particular interest in AI, public sector innovation, and digital politics. At the TUM Think Tank, Markus leads efforts to create dynamic interfaces between science, policy, industry, and civil society. The aim: to foster the responsible development and use of emerging technologies.​

Putting Users in Control of Their Social Media Experience

At the TUM Science Hackathon 2023, a team of computer science students took on the challenge of developing a social media platform that provides users with enhanced transparency and control over the content shown in their feed. They discussed what kind of information users need to better understand how content is personalized on social media and drew up ways for users to modify the content shown to them. Based on these ideas, they designed their prototype ‘openLYKE’ – a social media platform which implements additional features for users to tweak the underlying recommendation algorithm.
