Quantum Social Lab Joins the New European Quantum Academy
The Quantum Social Lab brings the societal and political dimension to Europe's largest education initiative for quantum technologies.
In mid-May 2026, the European Quantum Academy (EQA) officially launched. The alliance unites 71 partner institutions across six regional hubs in Europe, establishing for the first time a unified ecosystem for quantum education, from early school programs to doctoral research and lifelong professional development. Its goal is to overcome Europe's regional fragmentation in quantum education, provide equitable access to high-tech infrastructure, and build a sustainable, diverse, world-class quantum workforce for the continent's future.
Within this ecosystem, the Quantum Social Lab (QSL) plays a pivotal role. The Lab serves as a bridge between quantum technology and societal governance, ensuring that technological excellence doesn't develop in isolation from political and societal responsibility.
Policymaking for the Quantum Age
A key focus lies in upskilling and reskilling policymakers. Through Policy Roundtables and the coordination of Governance Roadmaps, the QSL helps ensure decision-makers can soundly assess the security, economic, and ethical dimensions of quantum innovation, a foundation for a robust regulatory framework for Europe's quantum future.
Strategic Intelligence
Beyond this, the Lab feeds the Academy's strategic intelligence: monitoring developments in the quantum job market and mapping the educational landscape to identify critical skill gaps early on.
Digital Infrastructure for Europe's Quantum Community
Finally, the QSL contributes to the Academy's operational foundation, co-developing a unified digital platform that facilitates mobility and knowledge exchange across partner institutions Europe-wide.
"The quantum transition won't wait for a new generation to graduate. We need to equip the professionals who are already in the room — the policymakers, regulators, and decision-makers who will govern this technology long before it's fully understood." says Fabienne Marco, Co-PI of the project.
While the European Quantum Academy strengthens Europe's technical talent pipeline, the Quantum Social Lab helps ensure that this talent is embedded within a responsible, socially innovative, and strategically governed European society. They have recently launched QuantWorld, their online learning platform that explores the future of quantum technologies within specific areas such as banking, medicine, and mobility.
