REMODE: A Co-Creative Method

The REMODE Method has been created collaboratively by the Constitutional Design Lab, established at the Professorship for Law, Science, and Technology at the Technical University of Munich and directed by Prof. Dr. Christian Djeffal. The Constitutional Design Lab offers introductions and coaching in design thinking and applying REMODE. The REMODE project is part of the Reboot Social Media Lab: Searching for new ways to reimagine social media platforms that work for everyone. The method has been made possible with funding support from TUM Think Tank.

A Method for Participatory Re-Design of Content Moderation

REMODE helps you to redesign social media by involving the people most affected by specific harms resulting from practices like hate speech, beauty filters, or manipulation. It is based on design thinking and optimized for the most effective user participation. REMODE is designed as a progressive way to conduct participatory risk management processes as required by the EU’s Digital Services Act. It pushes for tangible and far-reaching ideas to improve social media while involving the most affected groups as much as possible. This is a brief overview of how to run a REMODE project. A more detailed explanation can be found in a background paper with more detailed references and illustrations.

The Flow of a Design-Led Approach

This method combines divergent and convergent thinking, and it is relevant for use when you have to completely re-think an area of research from a fresh perspective. The REMODE method is suitable for the workshop format, as it allows one to work dynamically and collaboratively in a team. The method consists of five steps: PREPARE - UNDERSTAND - IDEATE - PROTOTYPE - TEST & TELL, and it is an iterative, non-linear process. Each step of the method is structured into [GOAL]-[STEPS]-[PARTICIPATION]-[WATCH OUT]. The method is enriched with a Glossary of specific #methods; each signaled where relevant throughout the steps
